Audiobook rights · Checked against Amazon’s own help pages

Can you even use Audible Virtual Voice?

Amazon will make you an AI-narrated audiobook. Most authors who go looking find out they don’t qualify — and the reasons are published, but scattered across five help pages. Answer eight questions and find out exactly where you stand.

Every rule below is quoted from Amazon KDP’s own documentation. Verified 2 August 2026. Sources at the bottom — check us.

Has Amazon invited you into the virtual voice beta?
It appears as an option on your KDP bookshelf next to an eligible title.
Is your KDP account in good standing?
Not terminated, blocked, or under review.
Is the book live on KDP right now as a reflowable ebook?
Not pre-order, not fixed-layout, not print-only.
What is the ebook’s primary language?
Do you hold worldwide rights, or at least US distribution rights?
Does this book already have an Audible audiobook?
Including one made from an earlier edition.
Is the book mostly plain prose?
Heavy images, tables, graphs or code excerpts are excluded — Amazon names cookbooks and comics.
How many voices does the book need?
This one does not affect Amazon eligibility. It affects whether Virtual Voice is the right choice.

The eight rules, in plain English

None of this is hidden. It is just spread across Amazon’s help centre in places nobody reads before getting their hopes up.

Invite-only beta
Amazon states plainly: "This is an invite-only beta for eligible KDP eBooks." Meeting every other requirement still does not get you in.
US marketplace only
"only available for books to be distributed in the US marketplace at this time."
Four languages
Your ebook's primary language must be English, Spanish, Italian or French.
Live KDP ebook required
Reflowable, published and live — not pre-order, not fixed-layout, not print-only. No KDP account, no audiobook.
No existing Audible edition
If the book already has an Audible audiobook — including from a prior edition — it is excluded.
Content restrictions
Books heavy in images, tables, graphs or code are out. Amazon names cookbooks and comics. Public domain titles are excluded outright.
40% royalty, $3.99–$14.99
Set outside that band and you cannot publish. The rate is not negotiable.
Amazon-only distribution
Amazon.com, Audible, Amazon Music Unlimited and Alexa. In KDP Select, Audible exclusivity applies for the enrollment period.
Where we are honest with you

If Virtual Voice accepts you, and you only care about Amazon, and one narrator is fine — use it. It costs nothing to produce and it sits next to the ebook you already sell. We are a smaller store than Amazon and we will not pretend otherwise.

Take us seriously in three situations: Amazon won’t let you in, you want the audiobook to exist somewhere Amazon can’t switch off, or your book has more than one character worth hearing.

One thing we will not overstate

“Sell it anywhere” has a real limit worth knowing before you plan around it. Spotify accepts AI-narrated audiobooks with disclosure — but their own policy says they “don’t currently share audiobooks with digital voice narration to referral partners,” so those titles stay inside Spotify rather than flowing on to its downstream stores. ACX still requires human narration for anything you produce yourself.

What you get from us is the finished, DRM-free files and the right to take them wherever the door is open. That is a real advantage over an audiobook you never receive a copy of — and it is not the same as universal distribution.
